Dog Walking

Traditionally associated with snow, husky sleigh dogs have, since time immemorial, been used in the summer. In effect the northern nomadic tribes (Indians, Inuits...) needed the dogs for travel all the year round.
Perennial nomads and as hunters, these journeys were necessary for their survival. Without snow, the dogs carried on their backs (bales), and also pulled small trailers (travois) thus carrying some of the load.
Today Thierry CHA, “musher”, founder of the driving school for sleigh dogs SHERPA, based in the Vallée du Louron , continues the modern version of this mode of travel, the “cani-rando”. The principle is simple; each participant holds the end of a long belt, of which part is elastic and harnesses the dog, which allows it to pull and climb.
After one “round of observation” has been made, a clear accord between each dog and it’s “master” for the day allows a pleasant, fun, walk through the beautiful natural countryside which is particularly appreciated by children, who will soon be adopted by Tandra, Mriva, Peppe and all the other dogs of the group, numbering 30 in all.
Cani-Rando is practical for all from 8 years of age, but younger can be equally involved using a wheeled pram (salky).
Thus a 100% ecologically friendly original mode of travel is achieved by which you can discover magnificent parts of the Vallée du Louron, close to Peyragudes and situated very near to the “Sherpa” base.
